Twenty-four-year-old Joel Christensen, who was born with Infantile Refsum disease, causing him to be unable to see or fully hear, stands with his grandfather Harold at his side as he tosses trash into the pit at the the Airport Road Transfer Station on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022, in Everett, Washington. Going to the transfer station is one of Joel’s favorite activities with the vibration of humming machinery, the whooshing of front end loaders and the tactile nature of his family’s trash all stimulating his strongest senses.

Saltzman gets drenched with a bucket of ice water as Cedar Wood Elementary celebrates their success in the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge on Thursday, March 24, 2022, in Bothell, Washington. Students at Cedar Wood raised over $20,000 for the AHA during the months of February and March, and five educators, including Saltzman, sacrificed themselves to buckets of ice-cold water to help reward the hundreds of students who participated in the Kids Heart Challenge.

Local wildlife enthusiasts gathered to watch the pup and protect it from curious passersby until its mother returned. According to the National Park Service, harbor seal pup season lasts from March through July, and babies can often be found on their own along the waterfront. This rarely means they have been abandoned, though, as the mothers are typically feeding in nearby waters.
