A NOTE FROM RYAN: For the last decade, ever since I first used my grandfather's hand-me-down Minolta as a freshman in high school, I have attempted to explore ways in which photography can be used to express life's intangibles. In practice, it is rare to create a photo that successfully becomes anything beyond a simple rendering of a physical thing. When covering news, efficiency is crucial, and photos are often just used as supplementary content. On the flip side, introspective work (art) can often become muddied with conceptualism and lose meaning altogether. My "photo sweet spot" exists somewhere between the two. When storytelling marries strong artistic principles, a photo is good, but when conceptual play joins the party, a 2D image becomes capable of conveying an experience or an emotion in a tangible way. This is what I aim for every time I shoot. Even if my photos don't land with every viewer, it is my hope that from time to time I create something that strikes someone and creates a visceral experience. I chase that phenomenon, for myself and for others. It's why I do this.
Every photo should be treated like a good beer. Sit with it a while. Understand it. Appreciate it before you move on to the next one.
